The International Day of the Midwife

May 5, 2019

For forty years I have had the privilege of practicing midwifery, an endeavor more rewarding, demanding, and just plain fun than anything else in my life except motherhood. Thank you all for being a part of it - I have such wonderful memories!

As I midwife, one practices every day, in the same way a musician or an athlete, a yogi or an artist must practice. I would have happily continued to practice, learning new things and meeting new people, but the nights and the years caught up with me.

A year ago I stopped attending births, but have had the continuing pleasure of seeing clients for well-woman health care needs. Unfortunately, the office where I was subletting space at a very reasonable rate was closed at the end of March. Efforts to find affordable part-time space, suitably equipped, have been futile. WeWork doesn’t seem to have gyn exam rooms.

While I will no longer be practicing midwifery, I will always be a midwife. The email, texts, and phone calls will still reach me, and I maintain client records until the youngest child turns 21 years old, or it’s been more than 7 years since you were seen for other than pregnancy care.

Please stay in touch - I love seeing your photos and sharing your news. I will be gardening, traveling, and studying French.

Love and best wishes,
Barbara

Climate March in Manhattan

On September 22, 2014

On Sunday, September 21, Barbara joined her granddaughter Kendall at the Climate March in Manhattan. Kendall came up with 18 of her friends from the University of Virginia, where she is a freshman, to make their voices heard in this cause.

It was a full house at Barbara’s apartment, with sleeping bags on the floors & lines for the bathroom, but we all had a great time.

3,400 Births for CBS Midwifery!

On August 23, 2014

On August 18th, CBS Midwifery delivered our 3,400th baby, Jackson Scott Harrison. Jackson’s parents, Scott and Viktoria Harrison, founded the NYC-based nonprofit charity: water, which raises awareness and money to help people living in developing nations get access to clean drinking water. Currently, 800 million people worldwide don’t have clean water to drink, and in the last 7 years, charity: water has raised more than $140 million, and funded over 11,000 water projects that will help 4.4 million people. To celebrate Jackson’s birth, Scott and Viktoria setup a fundraising campaign where friends and family could donate in his honor. To date, Jackson has raised more than $171,000 which will help 4,800 people get clean water.

I had a wonderful time at the Newport Folk Festival this summer with my husband, Josh, daughter, Eleanor, and friends. We rented a house near all the action and filled it with 6 adults and 5 kids. We enjoyed listening to many talented musicians and teaching Eleanor how to dance. Favorites included Nickel Creek, Tau and the Get Down Stay Down and Jeff Tweedy.  And boy does Newport have great fish and chips!

We also spent several days in Fire Island. It was mayhem and madness with my mom, sisters, sister-in-law, brother-in-laws, cousins, aunts, uncles, and nephews. Eleanor loved playing in the sand and putting her toes in the water.  She especially loved being entertained by her big cousins, JP, Harry, John and Hunter.  They taught her all about catching frogs, flying kites and building sand castles. We ended each day watching the beautiful sunset, sipping a cocktail, and cooking a huge barbecue.

In other news, I am now performing intrauterine insemination (IUI) in the office for single mothers by choice and same-sex couples.
